Sales Calls

This guide distills a 5-hour mastermind training into actionable principles, checklists, and a reusable prompt. Whether you sell with calls or want to eliminate them, the fundamental psychology of page design is the same. Applies to lead magnets, self-liquidating offers, and $50-100K offers alike.

The 3-Second Eye Test

You have ~3 seconds to imprint your main message. Design for peripheral vision, not focused reading. This is the "McDonald's Golden Arch" test — you can see it even looking backwards.

Principle Why It Matters

  • People tap a link, then they're done scrolling — you get one instant
  • Mobile users: one thumb tap, one glance, that's your shot
  • You're designing for skimmers, not readers
  • The "Right-Third Test": look at the right third — can you still read the text in your peripheral?

Action Application

  • Headlines: 10 words max for the core message
  • Font size: big enough to read in peripheral vision
  • Test: look off to the side — can you still read it?
  • If you can't with text, use a visual — circled number, arrow, image
"I'm making it really challenging for you not to get this imprinted on your subconscious."

Lead With the Outcome

Your headline should deliver the RESULT they want, not describe the pain they have. Sophisticated markets already know their pain — show them the destination.

HEADLINE FORMULA
[Big Outcome] + [Without Obstacle] + [Time/Speed Element]

Examples Proven Headlines

  • "50-100K/month in profit with no calls, no team, no stress"
  • "Get 1-3 clients in the next 7 days or you don't pay"
  • "Install the system that pre-sells clients so they show up ready to buy"

Rules Key Rules

  • Use their language — pull exact words from surveys, DMs, calls
  • Stack hot buttons — AI, consistency, profit, new, year
  • "New" sells — make it sound groundbreaking
  • Profit > Revenue — "Talking profit, not revenue"
  • Include the year — "Install this in 2026"
  • Use specific numbers — 50-100K, 1.4M, 95%

Market Sophisticated Market

Lead with OUTCOME. They already know their pain. Show them where they're going.

Market Mass Market

Lead with PAIN. They need to be reminded. "Does your back hurt?" works for beginners.

Headline Hierarchy

ElementPurposeExample
Main headlineBig outcome / promise50-100K/month in profit
Sub-headline 1Mechanism or "without" clauseWith no calls, no team, no stress
Sub-headline 2Speed / time / social proofIn less than 2 hours

Visual Authority

Show authority before they read a single word. Stack visual proof in rapid succession.

The Authority Stack

  1. Professional production quality — lighting, camera, framing = "this person knows what they're doing"
  2. Background awards — Two Comma Club trophies, certifications
  3. Wealth signals — $30K watch on wrist (subtle, not bragged)
  4. Photos with recognized figures — people they see in their feed daily
  5. Family / humanity — dog by pool, kids, wife — "I'm a human too"
  6. Office / environment — engineered to make them go "who is this guy?"
"I'm letting you know things without words and putting them in front of you visually as fast as I can in rapid succession."

Technique The Circle / Arrow Technique

  • Anything you circle, eyes will go to (YouTube thumbnail psychology)
  • Red circle with arrow = instant attention
  • White circle for positive highlights (red reserved for "bad")

Mobile-First Design

Design for mobile FIRST. The fold matters more than you think.

Rules Above-the-Fold Rules

  • Headline fully visible without scrolling
  • CTA button FULLY above the fold — not half-cut
  • Show visual hook — head peeking, arrows, circled number
  • Induce the scroll — arrows, partial images, curiosity gaps

Problem Why The Fold Matters

  • If button half-cut → user taps → mobile bar pops up → 3x the effort
  • "All of that matters. I don't care what your conversion mechanism is."

Technique The "Peeking Dome"

Show just the top of your head peeking from below fold. Creates curiosity. Combined with scroll arrows = scroll inducement.

Layout Mobile Testimonial Grid

Two-wide grid — not three (too small), not one (can't see volume). "I can see at least four on my screen at any given time."

Testimonial Strategy

Nobody cares about names. They care about faces, results, and emotion. Curate ruthlessly.

Display Display Rules

  • Order by fame/recognizability
  • Photos WITH you — not just headshots
  • Play button on every video
  • One killer quote per testimonial
  • Same size and length for scanning
  • Emotion of thumbnail = the result
  • 20 curated from 850+
  • All under 60 seconds
  • Illusion of choice

Mix Content Mix

  • Edify YOU: "John is very good at what he does"
  • Edify THE ROOM: "Everyone sharing world-class ideas"
  • Specific results: "18K to 434K a month"
  • Lifestyle: "I feel like James Bond on vacation"
  • Challenge reader: "This woman has the balls..."
The Zero-to-Hero Trap
If you display zero-to-hero testimonials, you will attract zeros. Display higher-end testimonials — people slightly above where your prospect is.

Testimonial Arrangement

2x2 grid format — doesn't break the flow of the sales letter. Each should stand alone as the ONLY one they watch.

Color Coding & Visual Contrast

Use color to separate concepts, direct the eye, and create emotional associations.

Color System

ColorAssociationUse For
Red / DarkPain, old way, badOld method, problems
Green / LightNew way, good, freedomSolutions, results
Purple / BlueAI, technology, modernAI features
White spaceLightness, easeNew/easy way sections

Font Psychology

Old way: gritty, handwritten font. Feels heavy.

New way: clean, modern font. Feels easy.

Old Way / New Way Graphic

MUST HAVE on every sales page. Old: many red steps crammed = heavy. New: few steps with space = light. "10 red bubbles vs 4 black = the 4 seems easier."

Copy Hooks & Skimmers

Every section needs a hook that sells consumption of the next section. Write for skimmers first.

Hooks Hook Examples

  • "Take 90 seconds to read this letter. You'll be glad you did."
  • "The next 36 minutes could be the most valuable of your life."
  • "P.S. Read the rest of this page to see how..."

Technique The Disarming Technique

  • Anticipate skepticism: "In your mind you're going 'prove that'"
  • Address it: "So we can get the proof out of the way..."
  • Disarms resistance, earns the right to continue

Rule Writing for Skimmers

If they ONLY read bold/big text, they should get the full message. Scroll test: read only headlines — does the story still make sense?

"I'm going to scroll through and just read the headlines so you can see you can get it just by reading the big text as a skimmer on the toilet."

Belief Shifting — The Big Domino

You have ONE big belief to shift. Everything else supports it.

Framework The Big Domino

  1. Identify the ONE big belief
  2. All copy/visuals/testimonials hammer it
  3. Smaller beliefs tee up the big one
  4. 100+ content pieces hit from every angle

Find It How to Find Your Big Domino

  • What must they believe before they buy?
  • What's the new opportunity that changes everything?
  • If they believe this, do all objections fall away?

The Belief Sequence

Step 1
Headline plants seed
Step 2
Proof confirms
Step 3
Testimonials show others believe
Step 4
Content hammers every angle
Result
"God damn it"

Open Loops vs Closed Loops

Keep loops open to create curiosity. Close them only to open new ones.

Open Loop

Unsatisfied desire / unfinished story. Creates tension, curiosity, the need to know.

Closed Loop

Completed payoff. Satisfaction. But immediately opens: "How do I apply to ME?"

The Loop Chain

Landing Page
"What are the 3 steps?"
VSL
Delivers steps, opens "How for ME?"
Call Booking
Closes that, opens "How much?"
Sales Call
Closes pricing, opens "Can I do this?"
Loop Rules
Always more open loops than closed. Never close without opening another. Don't open so many that confusion results.

Identity Selling

Give them identities to choose from. Make 2 undesirable, 1 aspirational.

The 3-Identity Framework

IdentityDescriptionFeeling
The GhostOpens content, doesn't complete, leavesUNDESIRABLE
The EntrepreneurDabbles, tries, never fully commitsUNDESIRABLE
The Bulletproof EntrepreneurCompletes everything, commits to masteryASPIRATIONAL

Why It Works

Nobody wants to be #1 or #2. By identifying as the bad option, they feel pain. The only escape is #3 (your offer).

Application

Gen 1 (Manual) → Gen 2 (AI-Assisted) → Gen 3 (AI Agent). Dull colors for old, vibrant for new.

Matchers vs Mismatchers — Reverse Psychology

Know whether your audience defaults to agreeing or disagreeing.

Matchers

If you say something, they go along with it. Accept first, reject later.

Mismatchers

If you say something, they believe the opposite. Reject first, accept later. John's audience = mismatchers.

Reverse Psychology in Copy

You SayThey Think
"This doesn't work""It might"
"You probably wouldn't qualify""Yes I would!"
"I'm not sure you need this yet""I definitely need this"
"Don't buy this"reads everything
"Be skeptical so the clients don't have to be."

Funnel Architecture

Each stage has ONE job. No side doors, no distractions.

StageGoalDoDon't
TopGet RIGHT people inOne CTA onlyMultiple CTAs
MiddleGet them to CONSUMERetarget qualifiedAsk to buy/book
BottomConvertVSL + Offer DocAnything else

Critical Rules

  • "Funnels don't have holes in the side"
  • Top = one CTA only
  • Middle = consumption only
  • All roads lead to conversion event

Middle of Funnel Audience

  • All product/course purchasers
  • 30-day VSL viewers
  • 60-day engagers
  • NOT random 180-day engagers
  • ~3,500 (small but hyper-qualified)

Old Way vs New Way

MUST HAVE graphic on every sales page. Even without reading a word, they should feel the difference.

Old Way

  • Painful SOP of their current process
  • Name it shitty ("Brute Force Selling")
  • Gritty font, many steps crammed
  • Feels heavy

New Way

  • Simple steps of your method
  • Name it clean ("The Propaganda Machine")
  • Clean font, breathing room
  • Feels light

Creating Contrast

Antonym pairs: "chase and close skeptical clients manually" vs "attract pre-sold clients automatically". 10 red bubbles vs 4 black = the 4 seems easier.

New Opportunity Positioning

Everything must be positioned as a NEW opportunity, model, or method.

FORMULA
The [New / Modern / Next-Gen] [Industry] [Model / System / Way]

Examples

  • The AI Agent Coaching Model
  • The Modern Hardscaper
  • The Web Agency Freedom Formula
  • The Bulletproof Model

Why "New" Works

  • When new, all you say is "here this is"
  • When saturated, you evolve
  • "The more groundbreaking, the better it converts"

How to Create Your "New"

  1. Name the old way (shitty feeling)
  2. Name your new way (modern/aspirational)
  3. Create generation framework (Gen 1, 2, 3)
  4. Have them identify which bucket
  5. Old = undesirable, new = aspirational

Sales Letter Structure

The sales letter is a webinar in pages. Same sequence, different medium.

The 12-Step Sequence

  1. Hook — "Take 90 seconds to read this"
  2. Proof — Numbers, dashboard, circled
  3. Disarming — "I'm not an AI marketing guru"
  4. Story — "I grew to hate my coaching business"
  5. Result — "Pre-sold clients showing up"
  6. Mechanism — "AI agent runs 95%"
  7. Social Proof — Testimonials in 2x2 grid
  8. Trends — "Smart coaches are transitioning"
  9. Offer — "Introducing [Product]"
  10. Bonuses — Named after beliefs
  11. Close — CTA + guarantee
  12. P.S. — Another hook

Bonus Naming Strategy

Name bonuses after beliefs: "Belief Shift Blueprint", "98 Buying Beliefs", "AI Agent Trust Audit", "The Conversion Codex"

"Sell What They Want, Then Tell the Truth"

Front end = bait they want. Once in = tell the truth. "I'm pandering to your universe... letting you buy for those reasons."

Naming CTAs After Pain

Name your CTA after what they actually want. Nobody woke up wanting a "discovery call."

Bad CTA Names

  • "Book your 20-minute call"
  • "Book your free profit audit"
  • "Ready to accelerate my revenue"

Good CTA Names

  • "Yes, I want to get out of the weeds"
  • "Book my get out of the weeds call"
  • "Book your leverage call"
CTA FORMULA
Button: "Yes, I want [their words for the outcome]" — Subtext: "Book your [pain-to-pleasure] call"

The ICP Narrative Timeline

You must be able to tell your ICP's life story from ambition to present.

The Universal ICP Timeline

  1. Always been ambitious, never had a vehicle
  2. Found "online business" / "internet money"
  3. Bought a course
  4. Hustled to first clients
  5. Found out who they like working with
  6. Scaled but it sucked
  7. Cleaned up — realized it's about WHO and HOW
  8. Bought another program, tried another model
  9. Some success, some failure, kept jumping
  10. "Is this all this is going to be?"
  11. Funded lifestyle upgrade — can't stop now
  12. Committed to figuring it out
  13. Not going to be the one who gave up
"If you can't explain that timeline for your ICP, it's hard to market to them."

Broken Windows

If 99% is dialed but 1% is broken, the 1% destroys all trust.

The Spider Web Story

High-end dentistry office. Ritz Carlton level. Italian leather chair, hot towel. Look up: spider web with EGGS. Even after cleanup: "What ELSE is wrong?"

Application

  • Broken links
  • Videos that don't play
  • Testimonials that don't load
  • Buttons that don't work
  • Slow page load
  • One embarrassing testimonial
The Rule
"If 99% of your shit's dialed in, that 1% broken window creates terrifying uncertainty about everything else." Audit EVERYTHING regularly.
